about

Koraï Projects hosted An Elegy for Coming Undone, a solo show of Cypriot painter Eleni Odysseos. The artist presented a new series of works painted on deadstock raw silk collected from fabric stores across Cyprus. The rich history of Cypriot sericulture threads through craft, commerce, exploitation, colonisation, and domestic and industrial production but has repeatedly excluded the posthumanist perspective of the silkworm, whose lifecycle is violently interrupted in the process.

Over time, the artist’s interaction with the silk lays the foundations for an interspecies dialogue that actively negotiates with the material’s symbolic connotations and expands the notions of biopolitics and power. Beyond biochemical and industrial processes, this dialogue also considers socio-ecological interdependencies and crises, literal and metaphorical fertility/infertility, and the struggle for metamorphosis on an increasingly toxic planet.

By exploring non-human death, these works invite a closer inspection of how death, spirituality and transformation are invisibilised within a society addicted to extending life and youth. The artist draws inspiration from marginalised and persecuted women's collectives across time and place, who conjure spells that tend to the community, the land and the waters, making and protecting spaces for solace and regeneration. The psycho-spiritual 'landscapes' marked in alizarin claret, amethyst, quinacridone gold, naphthol red, green gold and other deadly pigments engulf the exhibition space.

Accompanying the paintings is a commissioned sound piece by electronic musician Spivak, co-produced with Odysseos.

biography

Eleni Odysseos (1991, Cyprus) lives and works between London and Nicosia. She graduated from the MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2018 and was awarded the Abbey Fellowship at the British School of Rome in 2020. In her practice, she searches for remnants of interconnectedness. Her paintings explore desire, abjection, and isolation through symbolic figuration, choreographing a constellation of painting, text, sound, and light. Recent exhibitions include: The Tending of the Otherwise (Procida, Italian Capital of Culture, 2022), Mediterranea 19 Young Artists Biennial - BCJEM (San Marino), Hook Selects (New York, 2021), Hotel Happiness (London, 2021) Mostra, British School at Rome (Rome, 2021), Seeking Roots, NiMAC (Nicosia, 2021), Data – Saturated (UK-CY, 2020), Be Water Again, Koraï Project Space (Nicosia, 2019), and Figurative NOW. Daniel Benjamin Gallery (London, 2018).

The event opens with a reading that speaks to the social, ecological and historical threads that connect this land to sericulture, to womens’ collectives, to witchcraft, to spells and to superstitions, while drawing connections between the paintings’ semiotics and materiality to rituals of undoing and transformation. The biological process of metamorphosis has guided our thinking as we considered the conceptual, ethical, methodological and material implications of working with deadstock raw silk. At the same time, we juxtaposed an expanded understanding of “metamorphosis” against the current Cypriot socio-economic and political backdrop. As such, stories of commoning, regeneration, spirituality and mourning as enacted along and outside the margins of institutionalised frameworks figured as important sources of inspiration for this series of works. In addition to this presentation, this gathering invites the public to share their own interpretations of these notions, and to participate in the creation of a plurivocal lexicon on metamorphosis.

As we write this, our thoughts are with Gaza. We recognise that we cannot speak of mourning and the struggle for transformation without raising the alarm on the genocide of the Palestinian people by the state of Israel on other shore of the Levantine sea. We also do not underestimate the profound impact, both positive and negative, this will have on our collective capacity to imagine, and to be in peaceful intercommunal coexistence locally, and globally. Precisely because in the darkest of times it seems as though ‘metamorphosis’ into another state is diminishing, it is ever more urgent to ask ourselves: What are the spells we need to cast for facilitating the change we wish to see? While we would like to acknowledge the limits of what this brief public program can offer, we also believe in the power of ‘minor gestures’.

Listening session “Sleep comes dropping” with Spivak

κώμα καταιριον/sleep comes dropping is a line from the second fragment of Archaic Greek female lyric poet Sappho, in which she invites Aphrodite, or otherwise called Kypris, to visit her in an idyllic grove of a temple. This fragment is known for its particularly rich imagery waking up all five senses with the intention to draw Kypris and the reader into this mystical place shared by the poet, the goddess and potentially, a communal celebration of her priestesses.

Sappho suggests this place to be so sweet, that sleep drips down from the shade of the trees. An additional interpretation we offer is the familiar sensation of falling as our bodies move from a wakeful to a sleeping state. Hypnic jerks can be accompanied by dreams and hallucinations and one theory suggests it is a way for the body to test whether sleep paralysis has taken effect so the dreamer does not endanger themselves and others by acting out their dreams. While other explanations attribute it to stress and stimulants. Thinking about sleep across species, we also learnt that silk caterpillars experience four stages of sleep in their adulthood, accompanied by fasting, before they begin weaving their cocoon that will move them into the final stage of their metamorphosis.

sleep comes dropping invites listeners to fall into a limbo between wakefulness and sleep, into a state of rest and recuperation under the waning crescent moon. This session builds on these images and sensations, as well as on a previous collaboration between Odysseos and Spivak on the sound piece Bucorvo Abissino, 10:15; co-produced during Odysseos’ Abbey Fellowship at the British School at Rome in 2021.

O εκθεσιακός χώρος Koraï Projects φιλοξένησε την ατομική έκθεση της Ελένης Οδυσσέως, με τίτλο “An Elegy for Coming Undone”.

Αποφοίτησε από το MFA in Fine Art στο Goldsmiths, University of London, το 2018 και της απονεμήθηκε η υποτροφία Abbey Fellowship στη Βρετανική Σχολή της Ρώμης το 2020. Πρόσφατες εκθέσεις της περιλαμβάνουν: The Tending of the Otherwise (Procida, Ιταλική Πολιτιστική Πρωτεύουσα, 2022), Mediterranea 19 Young Artists Biennial - BJCEM (Άγιος Μαρίνος), Hook Selects (Νέα Υόρκη, 2021), Hotel Happiness (Λονδίνο, 2021) Mostra, British School at Rome (Ρώμη, 2021), Seeking Roots, NiMAC (Λευκωσία, 2021), Data - Saturated (UK-CY 2020), Be Water Again, Korai Space (Λευκωσία, 2019), Figurative NOW., Daniel Benjamin Gallery (Λονδίνο, 2018).

Η εικαστικός Ελένη Οδυσσέως και η επιμελήτρια Ντενίζ Αραούζου σας προσκαλούν σε μια διάλεξη και συζήτηση που πραγματοποιείται στα πλαίσια της έκθεσης An Elegy for Coming Undone στο Korai project space.

Καθώς γράφουμε αυτό το κείμενο, οι σκέψεις μας είναι με τους ανθρώπους της Γάζας. Καταδικάζουμε την γενοκτονία του Παλαιστινιακού λαού από το Ισραήλ που εξελίσσεται στην απέναντι όχθη της θάλασσας. Επίσης, δεν υποτιμούμε τις βαθιές επιπτώσεις, θετικές και αρνητικές, που θα έχει αυτή η ιστορική στιγμή στη συλλογική μας ικανότητα να φανταστούμε και να προχωρήσουμε προς μια ειρηνική διακοινοτική συνύπαρξη στον τόπο μας αλλά και στο παγκόσμιο. Ακριβώς επειδή σε σκοτεινούς καιρούς η μεταμόρφωση γίνεται όλο και πιο επείγουσα, αναρωτιόμαστε: Ποια είναι τα «ξόρκια» που πρέπει να ρίξουμε για να δούμε την αλλαγή που θέλουμε να δούμε;
